Apparently writing a cooking blog makes me the resident Dinner Consultant amongst my friends. I get a lot of messages listing seemingly incongruous ingredients from the depths of their sparse kitchens, inevitably requesting a dinner idea or two. I find that attempting to keep a stocked kitchen prevents these kinds of evening (or mid-day) crises in my world 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time? I whine until I decide to go out. Below is a list of what I like to keep on hand. Obviously it contains some very personalized additions--things to bake bread, a few Jewish staples, a glut of Asian condiments, self-chopped onions to save my poor eyes from multiple attacks. It's also missing a few things others might include, like frozen and canned vegetables, most likely because I strongly oppose their presence in my food.
